Chemnitz | 2025
Chemnitz, long known as an industrial city, is undergoing a transformation and looking forward with pride and excitement to 2025, when it will be named the European Capital of Culture. This city in Saxony demonstrates that cultural diversity, innovation, and community can flourish outside of large metropolitan areas.
Chemnitz's selection as the European Capital of Culture was no coincidence. In recent years, the city has developed into a creative center with great potential. Rather than focusing on glitz and spectacle, the city emphasizes participation, change, and identity. The motto, "C the Unseen" — "See the Unseen" — reflects the aspiration to highlight stories, places, and people that have previously received little attention.
Culturally, Chemnitz has a lot to offer. The Gunzenhauser Museum, which features modern art from the 20th century; the State Art Collections; the Opera House; and numerous independent cultural initiatives characterize the cityscape. The city's industrial past lives on in impressive buildings such as the Wirkbau industrial hall, which is now a creative center. New spaces for art, encounters, and exchange are also emerging outside the city center, often in places where people used to work.
